The Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, in collaboration with the Centre for Strategic Communication Excellence (CSCE) and Reputation Lighthouse, has launched a global survey to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in public relations and communication.
The survey aims to understand how professionals are addressing AI in an ethical and responsible manner, gathering insights that will help prepare for the Global Alliance AI Symposium in May in Venice. The results will influence updates to the Global Alliance's Guiding Principles for Ethical and Responsible AI and connect with the Responsible Communication Movement.
The survey encourages widespread sharing to ensure a global response.
Additionally, February is recognized as "Global Alliance Responsible Communications - Ethics First Month 2025," focusing on the importance of ethical and responsible communication in an increasingly complex and polarized global context. Implementing ethical and responsible communication has become crucial across various sectors, including business, government, non-profits, and education. Communication professionals face growing challenges, including crisis management, fact-checking, privacy, and inclusivity. Specific areas of focus include:
1. Managing AI-generated content – The rise of AI tools for content creation raises ethical concerns around authenticity, authorship, and bias. Communicators must ensure AI-generated material is transparent and responsibly used.
2. Managing online harassment and toxic discourse – Engaging with the public online comes with the risk of facing negativity, hate, and misinformation. Professionals must moderate discussions while respecting freedom of speech and maintaining brand integrity.
3. Balancing transparency and brand reputation – Companies are urged to be transparent and honest, but communicators often face pressure to craft narratives that protect their employers, sometimes crossing ethical boundaries.
4. Avoiding greenwashing and other ethical pitfalls – With growing attention on corporate responsibility, communication professionals must ensure sustainability claims and diversity commitments are truthful and not misleading.
Ethics First Month aims to spark a dialogue on responsible communication practices.
